Discover Paris

5th ArrondissementFocus on the
5th arrondissement

The Latin Quarter is famous for the Sorbonne University, the Pantheon, its “bouquinistes” (traditional book stalls) along the Seine and its jazz clubs.

There is a maze of medieval pedestrian alleys around St Michel and rue Moufftard, as well as around the streets of Saint Jacques and Saint Germain. This area also has lovely green spaces, Jardin des Plantes and Jardin du Luxembourg, which provide a haven from the general liveliness in the area.

It has a village atmosphere with a mixture of students, professionals, commerce and tourists. With an overflow of restaurants, bars and bookshops, the 5th is ideal for anyone, families and individuals alike, wanting to be in the hub of things.

The beautiful Mosquee de Paris and the Institut du Monde Arabe, with their inspiring North African cultural influences, add a cosmopolitan touch to the area.

Properties

Apartments are generally older and, although highly sought-after, are not unaffordable.

More recent developments can be found in the quieter residential areas further south and towards the Jardin des Plantes.

Larger apartments can be found on the main arteries, and although apartments with a view of the Seine and Notre Dame are possible to find, they are scarce on the market.

Ten things you should do in the 5th Arrondissement

  • Visit the National Natural History Museum complex and wander through the botanical Jardin des Plantes, stop by the zoo and aquarium that hold nearly 1,000 different species, and brush up on your history knowledge at one of the many rotating exhibits.
  • Make a trip to the Pantheon, one of the best examples of Neoclassical architecture in Paris and the famous burial place of some of the most well known intellectual minds of the past century.
  • Stop at Le Piano Vache, a well known student hangout features passport style photos on the walls of individuals who've had a drink there in the past.
  • Take a dinner cruise on the Don Juan, a yacht featuring haute cuisine from a well known 2 star Michelin chef.
  • Browse through the vast array of new and second hand books at the iconic cultural bookstore, Shakespeare & Co., a popular hangout for some of the most prolific authors in Paris.
  • Visit L'Eglise Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, the famous church that houses the shrine of Saint Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris.
  • Take a morning stroll down the lower half of Rue Mouffetard one of the oldest streets in Paris, where the open market dating many centuries is still in operation and bustling with locals.
  • Spend the day at the Grande Mosquée de Paris, enjoying the beautiful architecture and incredible atmosphere. Enjoy a relaxing hamman, or massage and have a cup of sweet mint tea afterwards.
  • Enjoy a meal at the Moroccan restaurant on top of the Arab Institute, which features a splendid view of the sprawling city below.
  • Sign up for the Manstouch Wine Promenade of wine bars on the left bank in the 5th. Spend the evening as a connoisseur, wandering amongst some of the best bars in the city.
