Focus on the 1st Arrondissement
The 1st arrondissement, in the heart of Paris, is a lively tourist area with some of Paris’ most well known landmarks: Palais du Louvre, Tuileries gardens, Palais Royale, Sainte Chapelle, Place Vendome, the old market place Les Halles and the beautiful St Eustache Church.
It is essentially a daytime area for businesses together with many high street fashion boutiques on the rue de Rivoli and Forum des Halles. Haute couture designers such as Yves St-Laurent and Christian Dior can be found on rue Saint-Honore. In the evenings it is animated with a mixture of bars and restaurants catering for all tastes.
Ten things you should do in the 1st Arrondissement
- Visit the Louvre. The best way is to pick a small section each day and only visit that one section. That way you avoid getting overwhelmed.
- Stop in one of the Costes creations for lunch, dinner or just a drink. You will find Hotel Costes and Cafe Ruc on rue St Honore and Cafe Marley in front of the Louvre.
- At Bar Hemingway in the Ritz on Place Vendome you can order the most expensive cocktail in the world from the most famous bartender and watch the master at work!
- Jardin des Tuileries provides an excellent view from the Louvre all the way to La Defense and there are always a number of activities going on, from exhibitions to the summer fair.
- Peek in all the pet and garden shops lining the Quai de la Megisserie where the French elite go to buy their pedigree pets and fill their window boxes with seasonal flowers.
- Visit Palais Royal and browse the colorful antique and bric-a-brac shops or choose a cafe and wait for one of the many buskers to come and perform for you.
- Walk down rue des Petits Champs to Place des Victoires, visiting the mixed vintage and label shops before choosing from a wonderful selection of bistros.
- Turn your late night walk toward rue Coquillere to eat at Au Pied de Couchon, the famous restaurant that never closes. If you dare to try pig’s feet then this is the place to do it!
- Visit Musee de l’Orangerie which was just refurbished in order to create a better space for its most famous series of paintings, Les Nympheas by Claude Monet.
- Take in some people watching on Pont des Arts where hundreds gather with picnics and instruments around sunset. Once dark you can visit Le Fumoir for dessert or a drink.
