Avenue Magenta, the main artery, is undergoing a complete overhaul with sidewalks, bus and cycling lanes being widened and trees and gardens planted. Although currently somewhat unappealing, it is expected to become a much more desirable area upon completion of its makeover.
The Canal St-Martin, Quai de Valmy and Jemmapes, previously a run down working class area, has been renovated and is becoming one of the most picturesque walks in Paris with trendy bars and designer shops.
To the south is the bustling Place de la Republique with its restaurants, bars and cafes.
Republique to the south offers a variety of apartments and the trendy area of Canal St Martin is becoming extremely sought-after, making it one of the more expensive parts of the 10th. It is the only area that has a community spirit, with fashionable bars and cafes popping up all over.
The north and west can be quite run down, with less expensive properties and a mixture of traditional and modern architecture.
